Ujima Scholarship Fund​
Our Mission

Ujima, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to improve health outcomes in the African American community. Ujima, Inc. provides a scholarship fund to ensure that African Americans remain visible, viable and impactful in the Health Sciences. The organization was established in 2010. The scholarship fund is community based, as we believe the combined economic power of African Americans can impact those issues which most affect African Americans.

Eligible Institutions &
Purpose

The Ujima, Inc., Scholarship Fund is available to African American students currently attending:

​

  • Western University of Health Sciences

  • The University of California at Riverside School of Medicine

  • California University of Science and Medicine

  • Keck Graduate Institute, PharmD students.

 

Students who are eligible may apply for a cash award.

The purpose of the Ujima Inc., Scholarship Fund is to:

  1. Create a workforce of African American health science professionals who share our organization's vision of health equity for African Americans.

  2. Encourage African American students pursuing advanced degrees in the health sciences to practice direct patient care in a Medically Underserved Area (MUA), as defined by the US Department of Health and Human Services.

  3. Achieve improved health outcomes for African Americans. Scholarships must be used for required fees, tuition, books, supplies, and educational equipment costs related to the applicant’s health science education. All awards are subject to the availability of funds.

Selection Criteria

Selection for the Ujima, Inc., Scholarship Fund is based solely on information contained in the application, supporting documentation and the in-person interview. Incomplete and ineligible applications will not be considered. Selection for awards is based on the following criteria:

Financial Need

Career Goals

Community Goals

Actual or potential financial difficulty in completing education in the absence of the scholarship.

Professional goals for the next five (5) to ten (10) years.

Documented volunteer service and/or activities, particularly in a Medically Underserved Area (MUA).

Family Background

Documented volunteer service and/or activities, particularly in a Medically Underserved Area (MUA).

Academic Performance

Prior and current academic performance; potential for future academic success.

Ranking 

Priority will be given to students who will complete their healthcare program within the next two years. Awards are made on a competitive basis.

Ujima Scholarship Fund​
Eligibility

To be eligible for a scholarship, students must agree to the following terms:

  • Must be a current, full-time student for the 2024-2025 academic year.

  • Must be in good academic standing in your program.

  • Must be a US Citizen or a Legal Resident planning to practice in the United States.

  • May reapply, as long as all qualifications are met.

  • Immediately following completion of academic training and or post-graduate training, complete a one (1) year service obligation working in a MUA (Medically Underserved Area as defined by the US Department of Health and Human Services.

OR

 

  • Volunteer to complete 100 hours providing direct patient care in an MUA. Applicants are encouraged to continue their service commitment in an MUA, after the service obligation ends.

 

Each part of the application must be completed and supporting documentation must be submitted by the appropriate deadline. Only completed applications will be considered. Ujima, Inc., will NOT notify individuals if their application is incomplete. Applicants are encouraged to email Ujima Inc., at Ujimascholarshipfundsocal@gmail.com to verify their application status.

Selection Process

Once the completed application is received, it will be scored based upon the Selection Criteria. Applicants will then be scheduled for an in-person interview by a member panel of the Selection Committee and the interview will also be scored. Based upon the combined scores, applicants will be ranked, and the top applicants will receive a cash award.
